EPNE submits Federal Immission Control Act (BImSchG) permit application for 13 MW wind farm in Helmstedt area

Kick-off for green energy landscape with up to 400 MW of wind and solar on post-mining land in Lower Saxony

In August 2022, the project development company EP New Energies GmbH (EPNE) submitted the BImSchG permit application for two wind turbines to the immission control authority of the Helmstedt district in Lower Saxony. A green energy landscape is to be created on the former mining areas of the Helmstedt mining district – the prelude to this is the HSR 1 wind farm.

Two wind turbines of the type Siemens Gamesa SG 6.6-170 with a hub height of 165 m and a total height of 250 m as well as a total output of 13.2 MW are to be erected southwest of Helmstedt within the priority area for wind energy use “HE 2”, adjacent to an existing wind farm. The approval procedure is conducted in accordance with the Federal Immission Control Act (BImSchG) with environmental impact assessment and public participation. The application describes in detail the technical and planning aspects of the project. The environmental impact assessment prepared by an expert shows that negative environmental impacts on protected assets such as humans, soil, flora and fauna can be ruled out.

“With the development of the HSR 1 wind farm, we are starting the CO2-neutral redevelopment of the former mining areas of the Helmstedt Revier. In the coming years, the coalfield will be transformed into a green energy landscape with up to 400 MW of solar and wind energy” commented Dominique Guillou, Managing Director of EPNE on the submission of the BImSchG permit application. “We are very proud to implement this outstanding project together with our cooperation partner Helmstedter Revier GmbH, a company of the MIBRAG Group.”

“The transformation of post-mining landscapes into renewable energy landscapes is an important contribution to the energy transition. With the expansion of renewable energies in the Helmstedter Revier, we are continuing the regional tradition of energy production and at the same time contributing to independence from fossil energy imports” said Armin Fieber, Managing Director of Helmstedter Revier GmbH.

EPNE plans to build the wind farm after a successful approval process and to deliver it to its client and cooperation partner Helmstedter Revier GmbH in 2025.
